Schon seit Jahrhunderten sind die Hawaiianerinnen dafür bekannt, Stoffe aus Baumrinde herzustellen und mit alten Symbolmustern zu bedrucken, und zwar die Feinsten in ganz Polynesien. Heute werden sie noch als Wanddekoration, für Feste, Rituale und als Hulakostüme auf die traditionelle Art angefertigt. Aber es hat sich auch eine moderne Kunstrichtung daraus entwickelt. Anlässlich einer Hulaaufführung auf Weltbühnenniveau gab es auf Maui im Januar eine Ausstellung und eine Vorführung der Herstellung.
